Research says rap music fans more likely to have psychopathic tendencies
A new study reveals the correlation between psychopathic tendencies and music choice.
Researchers tested 200 people in their musical preference spanning 260 styles of varying genres and found that those with the highest psychopathic inclinations preferred rap music.
In contrast, those who scored lowest on the ‘psycho-meter’ preferred pop songs like Sia’s Titanium.
The future of the research could show use in predicting the disorder, and in turn help people understand and curb their disorder.
Some of the top psychopath scores were the biggest fans of rap hits like ‘No Diggity’ by Blackstreet and ‘Lose Yourself,’ by Eminem.
This, however, does not mean that all people listening to rap music are murderous monsters like Hannibal or the Joker.
There is so much more to this neurological disorder which this research could shed light on.
Psychological dark matter
Psychopaths are not always the serial killers seen in the press, but could be the person sitting next to you in the office.
Lead author of the study, Dr Pascal Wallisch sees them as “psychological dark matter.”
The mission of this study is to identify them without prying because they do have the tendency to cause serious harm.
Some signs of a psychopath include: superficial charm, a grandiose notion of self-worth, impulsiveness, pathological lying, strong manipulation and a lack of remorse or empathy.
They tend to exhibit unconvincing emotional responses, which is due to their lack of understanding of emotions, though they are able to mimic them.
“Even expert Dr Hare, who birthed the Hare Psychopathy Checklist-Revised (PCL-R) used as a diagnostic tool to determine where someone lies on the psychopathy spectrum, warns that anyone can be duped during a short interaction with a psychopath.”
There are different levels of the psychopathic nature and not all of them become killers.
This research could result in a screening test that can spot a psychopath using an online playlist- although it is without consent or even the knowledge of the ‘subjects,’ the bigger picture is for the greater good.
Unlike Hannibal, who likes classical music, the study reveals that those who prefer rap music are more likely to possess psychopathic tendencies.
