ProKid death: was it drug abuse?
Last week South Africa lost ProKid, a hip-hop superstar.
At the tender age of 37 years old, Linda Mkhize, better known as ‘ProKid’ passed away at the inner-city Johannesburg flat of his alleged lover, Mandisa Mbanjwa.
The cause of death appears to be violent seizures though there is speculation that drugs may have played a part in his untimely passing, speculation his family is heavily denying.
Zakwe, a close friend of Pro, spoke to the Ghetto Science hit maker a mere two weeks before his death and reported hearing him “very depressed sounding” because of music industry frustration.
As he told TshishaLIVE, “He called me around midnight. He said that it had been a while since anyone had called him and asked him to come through and perform. He didn’t have a lot of gigs. It really hurt him that no one was seeing his value. I believe that he was going through a depression of some sort before he succumbed to the seizure because of that.”
RIP ProKid
Industry depression is something that many artists face when the high of being loved comes crashing down and you are left without bookings or friends despite being the ‘number one flavour’ some time ago.
He was reportedly seeing his mistress, Mandisa Mbanjwa, for a year and the two even planned on having a baby in the future.
His wife, Ayanda’s (with whom he has a 3-year old daughter) spokesperson is asking for “time, space and peace to mourn our beloved,” declining to comment on the rapper’s affair.
Plans are in place to have him buried at Heroes Acre at Westpark Cemetery, this Sunday.
RIP ProKid and thank you for all you did for music in SA.
