Watch Odyssey The Art Of The DJ by Mark Knight Toolroom Recs
Odyssey The Art Of The DJ is a 20 minute documentary on DJing and playing extended sets.
The film is presented by Mark Knight from Toolroom Records.
Odyssey The Art Of The DJ presents the commonly held notion that… “DJing is about creating a journey; it’s about telling a story. And to do that you need time.”
This is also a look into the journey that a DJ goes through in his career. And, more importantly, the journey that the DJ takes the fans on during their set.
Toolroom records owner, Mark Knight talks to Danny Tenaglia, Andy C, and Roger Sanchez about their lives as DJs and how they have seen their careers grow throughout the years that they have been in action.
Longer set times
Odyssey The Art Of The DJ looks at how vital it is to have a proper length of time to play a set that is able to tell a story and set listeners on a journey. They fear that this art is on its way out due to club and festival line ups cramming as many artists on their bills as possible. This makes it so that every performer has a limited set time and therefore this limits their ability to adequately tell a story through their sets.
Danny Tenaglia reflects on the concept of marathon sets and how he feels about them…
“Playing eight-hour sets to me was a regular job. Everybody worked 9am-5pm, but I was starting to work 9pm-5am. So that’s what was normal to me. Still to this day, I don’t consider that a marathon.”
“The project has been a labour of love and features some of the best DJs I know working today. I hope you enjoy watching it as much as we did making it,” said Mark Knight.
Staying true to the form of the Odyssey by Toolroom Records film, Mark Knight will be heading out on an
‘All Knight Long’ tour which will have him play sets that last six hours and more.
