Odesza says Music Should Be Free
Odesza, made up of Harrison Mills and Clayton Knight, a Billboard chart topping EDM duo who says that music should be free. Their album ‘In Return’ out last year is what has catapulted them to word wide success.
The duo were featured on RollingStone.com, they spoke about how they got started as two undergrads at Western Washington University and how they had not imagined that their ‘home brewed’ EDM would strike up world wide support.
For both of them it started out as a hobby, a way to break from daily routines and pressures. The organic and non-forced approach they had to making their EDM may have just been the magic that made everyone sit up and take notice.
They also have the idea that they could be the American ambassadors for an ambient electronic music sound and for the concept that music should be free. Their sound is a break away from the typical build and drop style EDM that is popular in the states and their thoughts on the sharing of music seems to coincide with their progressive thoughts on the industry.
When they were asked about their first album ‘Summer’s Gone’, why they released it for free and why they think that music should be free this is what they had to say…
“That was Summer’s Gone, basically — us dicking around in the basement of my house, in some shitty studio.” Said Clayton Knight
“All of our albums are on SoundCloud for free.” said Harrison Mills
The question about their record label popped up, they made it clear that the label had to be on board with how they see the consumption of music changing…
“It’s kind of like the way everything is changing. When we signed up with [Counter Records] it was something we talked about right away from the beginning. Like, ‘This is how we see music changing. If you’re on board with this, we think we should be a part of it rather than trying to fight it the whole time’.” Said Mills
“Streaming is the future. Buying albums and stuff will always be around, but the youth these days, they don’t download. They just have Spotify, SoundCloud, YouTube. You can find anything and stream it. And the networks are so fast now, you have 4G everywhere.” Added Knight
Do you agree that music should be free?
