For this massive package put together by House Afrika though, it’s the deep house end of their output – a positive and sophisticated sound that’s had a huge influence on the South African scene since the label’s inception 15 years ago – that is in focus.
And it has been microscopically examined, sieved, selected and segued by two House Afrika experts, Tim White and DJ Strat3gy, who’ve spread over 50 gems from the Large vaults across four superb CDs. The former has concentrated on the mellower end of their Large spectrum, while the latter has upped the pump and tempo.
In its decade-and-a-half of “celebrating the joy of modern urban living through rhythms and sound”, Large Music has released fare from some of the biggest names in modern dance music, including DJ Rasoul, Dennis Ferrer, Kerri Chandler, Roy Davis Jr., Mateo & Matos, John Hawley, Nathan G, TJ Kong & Russ Gabriel feat. Robert Owens, Distant People, Lovebirds, Miguel Migs and Matthias Vogt, and all are represented on this massive package.
Starting out with a set of pre-millennium classics (including multiple hit cuts from the likes of Rasoul, Ferrer and Chandler), the collection moves through the years and the gears, ending with Strat3gy’s sublime exploration of the label’s more modern fare from producers like Vogt, Nathan G and Tiger Stripes feat. Kerri Chandler. It’s a journey that ends by definitively proving that Large is as relevant as ever.
In light of this continued brilliance and their seminal, inspirational origins, now is the perfect time to sum up the huge achievements of this Chi-Town powerhouse. House Afrika have pulled this off with aplomb on this funky quartet of mixes.
