New EP by DJ Mujava and DJ Spoko on True Panther Sounds
Local Bacardi house pioneers DJ Mujava and DJ Spoko have announced a surprise release on True Panther Sounds.
The release is the first DJ Mujava and DJ Spoko joint EP and it is titled I.M.I which is an acronym for Intelligent Mental Institution. DJ Spoko has previously been released on other labels such as Lit City Trax and his own Ghetto Boyz label over previous years.
As you might remember seeing in the Bacardi house documentary, DJ Mujava became legendary for his ‘Township Funk’ track which was released back in 2008. Since then he went through some difficult times and was even hospitalized. Now it is 2016 and he has been back at it. It is motivational to see him making a comeback in this way.
The DJ Mujava and DJ Spoko ‘Township Funk’ jam is quintessential in defining the sound of Bacardi house with its combination of bass, funky synths with UK funky drums.
DJ Mujava made his first release in a long time with ‘Sghubhu Dance’ which is a cut from the EP. Vice described it as…
“Paired potently with piercing snare syncopation, the song’s melody is a raw, very-distant relative from the main riff from “Kernkraft 400,” and you can easily imagine it chanted in a soccer arena.”
Old friends, new music
DJ Mujava and DJ Spoko are old friends and production partners; they even worked together on ‘Township Funk’ which was released on Warp.
Now they have the new EP release together out on New York City’s True Panther Sounds. This label also previously released DJ Spoko’s debut EP titled ‘Ghost Town .
DJ Spoko describes Bacardi house…
“The music used to play only at night on a street bash; street bashes normally attend by “Bakakathi” (Gangstars). Most they used to drink Bacardi cider; that’s how the name came up. Normally we call it music of the night. The synth, drumming, and the upright bass or can say Fruity Loops software is Bacardi house.”
