Music Business Masterclass Series is a must for anybody wishing to forge a career in the music industry…
The Music Business Masterclass Series hosted by SAE Institute – Cape Town kicked off on Wednesday, 9 April. It was a full lecture room of aspirant music folk ranging from promoters to producers, engineers, DJs, musicians and music students. It was an encouragingly mixed bunch, in age, gender and race, all with one familiar goal; to learn more about the mechanics of how the music industry actually works.
Hosted by Trenton Birch, the head of Marketing and Operations at SAE Cape Town, he is an industry professional who has many years experience and is also a musician himself. He was ably accompanied by Roach Roth, the man responsible for kick-starting the digital music revolution in Cape Town with the launch of African Dope Records. He famously produced the ground-breaking ‘Acid Made Me Do It’ album under the name Krushed & Sorted with DJ Fletcher who teaches a part-time Ableton course at SAE as well.
Regular FREE Workshops
The Music Business Masterclass Series will be hosted every month and is FREE so join the SAE Facebook page HERE or follow them on Twitter HERE. Make sure you don’t miss out on the wealth of information being shared at these events. Asking around the room I discovered that most attendees are on the SAE Cape Town mailing list, so to be safe I’d definitely join this too by clicking HERE.
What Went Down
The first session of the Music Business Masterclass Series covered all the components that make up the music industry and with the aid of infographics and slides, made for an insightful and thorough overview of how and what makes this industry tick.
Here are the main music industry structures that exist:
- Recording/Music Labels
- Distributors / Aggregators
- Marketing / PR
- Collection Societies
Whilst Trenton stressed the importance of hard work and effort, citing the 80/20 principle – 80% hard work – 20% talent – and why networking and professionalism is paramount to success, Roach gave an informative breakdown of how revenue streams have changed from selling of physical commodities (vinyl, tape, CD) to the digital realm of download and streaming.
