Major League DJz have not seen a cent since signing to Mabala Noise
Major League DJz may look like they are well-off, but that is all on their own doing, they say.
Being signed to a record label brings about a certain amount of comfort and a sense of belonging to a family who looks out for each artist.
As an artist, doing it all on your own is daunting, uncertain and quite frankly too much to take on. Artists should be able to focus on creating and connecting with fans through gigs.
The artist/label relationship should be symbiotic, but in a lot of cases that have come to light recently, record labels have failed to fulfill their role.
This is something the Major League twins have recently spoken out about in an interview with Anele.
Mabala Noise goes silent
The duo recently opened up about how the label they are signed with, Mabala Noise, hasn’t given them any money, and so everything they do comes from their own pocket.
A huge part of the label/artist relationship is that the label owns the rights to your intellectual property (music, compositions, everything)
No contract is the same, with each contract unique according to negotiations reached by the artist and label.
Artists usually get an advance from the label, which is then returned to the label once said artist starts making money from album sales and shows.
In the case of Major League DJz, their deal with Mabala Noise only granted them ‘financial injections’ into projects, but the twins’ claim that never happened once.
They had to pay for everything themselves, without any support from Mabala.
Here’s a clip on the interview with Major League DJz.
