Major Lazer Particula video directed by SA filmmaker Adriaan Louw
Major Lazer Particula is a new video by Diplo and crew and it’s something really cool and different.
Off Major Lazer’s Know No Better EP, the track is all about African influence as it features SA’s Nasty C and DJ Maphorisa as well as Nigerian rapper Ice Prince and Nigerian-American artist Jidenna.
The video could display New York in the 70’s, but it’s actually Johannesburg in 2017.
Afros and bell bottoms, old cars and dim-lit discos- The video is all about the groove.
The Major Lazer Particula video was directed by South African filmmaker, Adriaan Louw and offers an unconventional view on a culture Americans seldom experience.
The music video for Particula shows a very groovy, stylish side of South Africa, taking a completely different stance to perhaps the generic world view of South Africa and Africa, respectively.

Louw was very excited to “shoot a film like this in Johannesburg,” as he says in a press release. “It was creating an ideal world within Joburg that was based in the 70s. I wanted it to feel like we were shooting a documentary of the culture that could have been in a city where disco, funk and Fela Kuti were everywhere.”
“We worked with some great artists who featured on the track — Jidenna flew in all the way from the States and Ice Prince came down from Nigeria. Was also my first time working with fellow South Africans Nasty C and DJ Maphorisa. Thanks to Word. Africa, Elene Du Toit, Allison Swank, Major Lazer and the whole crew for bringing this all to life.”
Still, it’s got a very Caribbean feel to it- which further shows the eclectic melting pot of culture we can experience musically.
