Considering the 90’s throwback House sound and it’s trendiness in the dance music arena, Maceo Plex’s DJ Kicks mix is filled with tracks that are up to twenty years old. The mix has a somewhat timeless feel while still remaining absolutely current.
A lot of the tracks used were oldies that were given a freshen up, few things in music come over better on the palette than something golden and olden given a fresh lick of modern taste; aiming to get a bit more deep and futuristic at the same time.
He voyaged on a rediscovery of what electronic music is essentially all about, giving this mix great depth and true storytelling character; comprised of vinyl only tracks.
Because a lot of the tracks were quite old they missed a few elements, Maceo re-edited for emphasis, adding percussion to a few of them. The point of this was to keep them relevant to the modern dance floor, while still enjoying its original feel. The mix won’t be available on any other digital portal for that reason other than on DJ KICKS.
Maceo Plex’s reason for this was that there wasn’t as much new music that he loved as much as the old. Not that there isn’t a lot of new music that he is into but just that none of it represented what he was trying to do with this specific DJ KICKS mix.
The come about result after listening to a mix of this nature, is not just a great musical enjoyment but also an education, a lesson in how electronic music for the dancefloor is done with well thought out intelligence and skill.
He hopes to one day be able to look back onto this mix and still find it fresh and inspirational. A mix for the timeless archives.
