Summer in Berlin Reloaded
Summer in Berlin Reloaded consists of 14 original compositions, 3 remixes and a ‘Mega Mix’ which is a mashup of all the tracks.
If you’re a fan of the 80’s then Summer in Berlin Reloaded will certainly push all the right buttons for you; especially if 80’s synth pop and new wave music was/is your bag.
You’ll appreciate this album even more if you love that 80’s sound but found yourself raving in the 90’s when the dance music explosion occurred.
In a nutshell Summer in Berlin Reloaded sounds a bit like an 80’s music producer making 90’s dance music and to be honest this assertion is not far wrong.
If you read the story of MacAngel you’ll understand that through a serendipitous relationship with a founding member of the massive 80’s synth pop band, Alphaville, namely Bernhard Lloyd, this album of songs came to realise its full potential.
The result is a very well produced collection of original songs that have been finely tuned by the German producer to give Summer in Berlin Reloaded a distinctive shine throughout.
There’s also a little bit of something for everybody, with the first half of the album sticking to an 80’s synth driven melodic dance music vibe but ,as mentioned earlier, reminiscent of 90’s rave.
Things kick off with the ethereal ‘Genesis, So It Began,’ a downbeat electronica affair followed by two out and out 80’s style synth pop tracks; ‘Inspirational’ and ‘Love is a Hunter’ would not be out of place on a Modern Talking album from that era.
After this follows seven straight up 4 to the floor 90’s rave tracks which vary from deep, to trance to slightly more ‘poppy’ but all with their own flavour. If you still have your old glow sticks this collection of tracks will get you looking for them and get ready for those flashbacks!
By the time we get to track 11 called ‘1.30AM’ MacAngel has switched direction slightly with a moody downtempo composition. This track is a firm favourite on the album and sets the tone for the slightly more eclectic side to Summer in Berlin Reloaded. ‘Hola!’ serves up a Kwaito infused number, whilst ‘Bang Da Beatz’ is a strong break beat banger (as the name suggests) followed by a trippy slice of twisty electronica on ‘Surrender.’
There are also two remix versions of the album’s first single, ‘Love is a Hunter’ and the original take on the track ‘System Overload,’ before this close of with the aforementioned ‘Megamix.’
In the digital download world we live in today albums are a tough sell as its simpler to just cherry pick the tunes one likes. Summer in Berlin Reloaded is a cohesive collection of songs though and if you like the vibe, it’s a fun listen from start to finish.
It’s cool that the more eclectic downtempo tracks are sequenced toward the latter part of the album, as this keeps the high intensity energy levels up for some real hands-in-the-air party starters one after the other. The remixes at the end are another added bonus too.
