Limpopo Marula Festival to feature AKA, Salif Keita & more
The Limpopo Marula Festival will feature performances by AKA, Salif Keita, King Monada, and Hugh Masekela.
The festival that celebrates Kwaito and hip hop music will take place on the 25th of February 2017. You can expect performances from artists such as Jabba, Thebe, Bricks, DJ Ganyani, Mdu Masilela, Cappacino, Complexion, Darque and more.
The Gospel and Jazz open air concert portion of the festival will also host Mafikizolo, Penny, Joe Shirimani, King Monada, Benjamin Dube, Worship House, Brothers of Peace and more.
The Limpopo Marula Festival serves a high level of local talent while the international performers from varying parts of the globe add a distinct worldliness to the event.
International performers will be coming from Angola, Namibia, Mozambique, Cuba, Zimbabwe, Venezuela, and Tanzania. The Limpopo Marula Festival aims to make the event one that will stimulate local economy and bolster tourism revenue in the province.
The Limpopo Marula Festival therefore has moved beyond simply being an entertaining time. What they have now is known as the Marula Industry Programme. It is a partnership of several stakeholders like SEDA (Small Enterprise Development Agency), Limpopo Tourism Agency, Limpopo Economic Development Agency, Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality, Mopani District Municipality, Office of the Premier, Limpopo Department of Sport, Arts & Culture, National Department of Arts and Culture, the Phalaborwa Tourism Association and the Kruger National Park.
The festival has been going for twelve years now and has managed to set itself as a benchmark for world class events in the area. It also highlights the Marula season and the months that the fruit can be harvested. This starts in January and ends during April every year.
The famous African fruit is a draw card for tourists and the addition of this festival adds more excitement and culture into the mix.
The Festival of the First Fruit, is the official ceremonial tasting of the first fruit hosted by local traditional leaders. This marks the kick off of Marula month. The tasting ceremony will take place at Dzata Museum in the Vhembe District on Saturday, 04 February 2017.
