The legend that was Andrew Weatherall – RIP
Andrew Weatherall remixed songs from Primal Scream, The Happy Mondays and New Order.
An absolute legend in the music industry, Andy Weatherall, sadly passed away.
One of the most important, respected and influential DJ/Producer to come out of Britain, Andrew leaves behind a body of work to be treasured for an eternity to come.
Andrew’s days started out in Windsor in Berkshire, west of London, where the music bug bit him early on. After leaving school in his teenage years, he was influenced by punk and post-punk and started playing in bands.
And then the acid house wave of the 80’s hit, where Andy, Terry, Cymon and Steve started their Boy’s Own fanzine, where they commented on fashion, records, football and beyond. Weatherall also started DJing at early acid-house club-nights like Shoom, Spectrum and The Trip.
Production and beyond
Weatherall’s first studio work was alongside Paul Oakenfold on the club remix of Hallelujah for the Happy Mondays. Other remixes followed, notably “World in Motion” for New Order, “Loaded”, a hit remix of Primal Scream’s earlier track “I’m Losing More Than I’ll Ever Have”, and the widely acclaimed ‘A Mix of Two-Halves’ version of Saint Etienne’s cover of Neil Young’s “Only Love Can Break Your Heart”.
His remix of My Bloody Valentine’s “Soon” was ranked at number 1 in NME’s list of The 50 Best Remixes Ever”.
Always looking to expand musically, Andrew created different projects including the Sabres of Paradise, Two Lone Swordsmen, The Asphodells and A Love From Outer Space.
Speaking about the appeal of DJing in 2016, Weatherall told the Guardian: ‘It’s quite vampyric, DJing. You’re never going to have that feeling of hearing that record for the first time again, but if you look into the eyes of someone who’s hearing it for the first time, it’s a nice vicarious feeling.
As close as last week Andy announced details of his new low-slung spacey dub release, ‘Unknown Plunderer’, and was excited for a fruitful year touring.
Andrew Weatherall died of a pulmonary embolism, with a statement from his manager citing that “his death was swift and peaceful”- RIP.
