LA night club bans laptops from its DJ booth
A Los Angeles night club has banned laptops from its DJ booth unless you’re ‘programming shit on the fly’.
Kenny Summit, the owner of ‘Cure An The Cause’ took to his personal Facebook profile to make the following statement:
“Unless you’re using it to control VINYL to do a turntablist type of set, a’la Jazzy Jeff type shit, or if you’re doing a LIVE thing where you’re actually programming shit on the fly. Keep your controller in your crib, dont come to work with training wheels. LEARN THE TOOLS OF THE TRADE already. Pioneer isn’t going anywhere any time soon, they ARE the industry standard, so brush up on how to use the CDJs already, get Rekordbox (its FREE) and buy a good USB stick for $40 that will store THOUSANDS of hours of music on it. We opened this place to showcase talent. So, show us your talent. :-)”

There is obviously some validity to Kenny’s purist claims about skill levels etc. But to others it might seem that the banning of laptops in any degree makes the club appear resistant to the progressive nature of technology.
He got various responses with many people patting him on the back. He also got some negative responses such as…
Brian Epstein – “This removes SPINNA, SETH TROXLER, KERRY CHANDLER, MIKE DUNN, STEVE LAWLER, LEE FOSS and so many more.”
Andre Ezer – “So Richie Hawtin can’t play at your events. Lol”
To which they replied to clarify, using the club’s page identity on Facebook…
Cure And The Cause – “If you took the time to read the post, you’d see people who actually USE the technology to enhance their DJ set are more than welcome to use whatever the hell they want. Our issue is with people coming in, setting up all kinds of shit just to simply mix from one track to the next. “lol”
If anything, this new rule of banned laptops from its DJ booth should make it more popular once the word gets around. All of those eager for a night out with music played by a DJ who isn’t staring at a screen will be lining up.
