Jozi FM DJ Mandla Hlatshwayo shot dead in Joburg
Mandla Hlatshwayo was a former actor on the soapie, Generations and more recently a Jozi FM DJ.
It was reported and confirmed by the SABC on Monday morning that Hlatshwayo was shot dead in Soweto on Sunday night during a robbery.
According to a spokesperson for the SA police, Captain Hitler Mgwenya, Mandla Hlatshwayo and a second person were shot at a pub know as the Meli Lounge in Pimvill, Soweto. The second person’s name has not yet been divulged until next of kin was notified.
“It happened at 23:00. Four armed suspects entered the pub and robbed people there. The two victims who were shot were trying to assist the other people in the pub who were being robbed,” Mgwenya told News24.
Jozi FM CEO Mpho Mhlongo rushed to the scene on hearing the news only to see his good friend Hlatshwayo lying motionless.
The shooters had even stolen the shoes of the Jozi FM DJ’s feet!
“He had no shoes on. They took his shoes. They took his life and then his shoes. It's all been very traumatic,” said Mhlongo.
Mandla Hlatshwayo had played the role of Siphiwe Phosa on SABC 1’s Generations for seven years prior to becoming a radio DJ.
Hlatshwayo was 40 years old and reports suggest that he and his friend died trying to assist two ladies from being robbed.
Mhlongo posted this on Facebook: "It is with sadness that I inform you of the passing of our beloved brother, friend and colleague, Mandla Hlatshwayo. He was gunned down last night at Meli pub in Pimville. He will be sorely missed. May his humble soul Rest In Peace!
