Jovislash joins the Gambino train with This is South Africa
Jovislash drops This is South Africa.
Though Childish Gambino’s American anthem This is America broke the internet, few could anticipate its far-reaching influence resulting in artists from other countries making songs of the same tune.
The power in the song coupled with strong imagery from the video in the original This is America gives viewers a barefaced look at issues facing America, with emphasis on police brutality against minorities.
And so, this idea has spread to other countries where artists are adding their own story to the template from the original.
There’s a This is Jamaica and a This is Canada, which is a parody because eh, it’s Canada.
This is the lighter side of replication, though there is another remake that was met with legal action from the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) though has now been withdrawn- This is Nigeria by Falz.
This is the world
There’s also a This is Africa by Axel Merryl and now this week This is South Africa by rapper Jovislash joins the legion.
The focal point for the song is the issue of domestic violence and abuse against women that’s plaguing South Africa.
It starts with a woman playing guitar before getting shot with a stat saying “63 women killed in 30 days in SA.”
Out of the many issues he could have chosen, the issue of femicide is something that needs to be acknowledged and this is a great way to do so.
The video was released on Monday and has already gained nearly 7 500 views.
