Idris Elba to star as struggling DJ in Netflix comedy ‘Turn Up Charlie’
Turn Up Idris Elba!
During the same week ‘DJ Big Driis’ appeared on the Coachella 2019 line-up, Netflix announced further details about his 8-episode comedy series Turn Up Charlie, which will see the reigning World’s Sexiest Man play a struggling DJ.
Created by Elba and Gary Reich, the show sees Elba star as Charlie, a struggling DJ who takes a gig as ‘manny’ to his famous friend’s daughter Gabby who is naturally a handful.
Co-stars include newcomer Frankie Harvey, Piper Perabo (Covert Affairs) and JJ Field (TURN: Washington’s Spies).
It’s hard not to think that the show is based on Elba’s own life (he’s been DJing for 14 years) although the struggling part seems a tad embellished- I mean he’s made it on the Coachella 2019 line-up where he’ll take the stage on the same day’s as Tame Impala, Solange, Kid Kudi, Weezer and Wiz Khalifa.
Offscreen onscreen DJ
Over the years Elba has released several EP’s as well as releasing an album in 2015 (Murdah Loves John (The John Luther Character Album).
Last year the talented artist launched his own record label, 7Wallace Music, which will see him take on a different role in the music industry.
From DJing to acting, and even record label boss- one thing remains constant and that is Idris Elba’s passion for his craft, whether it be music, film or now even a Netflix comedy.
Hopefully, the storyline does his brilliant acting justice!
Turn Up Charlie with Idris Elba, set for release on Netflix on Friday, March 15.
