Ice-T launches techno label called Electronic Beat Empire
Ice-T launches techno label, and it’s serious.
Legend of Gangsta rap, actor on the silver screen and even member of a metal band, Ice-T has done it all; almost all- but that has just changed with the launch of his techno label, Electronic Beat Empire.
The imprint, which has been billed as “a serious techno label” is a project created by Ice-T and his long-time friend and collaborator Afrika Islam, techno moniker Mr. X- former member of Rock Steady Crew and disciple of Afrika Bambaataa, electro progenitor.
Mr. X has spent the last 15 years DJing at raves and nightclubs in the techno capital of the world- Germany- and is eager to take his knowledge from the European scene to the States.
For their first project on Electronic Beat Empire, the pair released the debut album, called ‘Hip Hop DJs Don’t Play Techno.’
Real and raw
“I am not gonna act like I’m a techno wizard or know anything about it,” Ice-T tells Rolling Stone. “We’re into the real, raw creativity that’s out there. When they came with dubstep, that was a whole other part of music. The painting is never complete on the musical landscape, so let’s take it there with Electronic Beat Empire.”
As for the decline in the electronic music business, Ice-T says, “The label exists so that we don’t have to ask people to put our music out. If we get a hit record, we get a hit record. If we can birth a new star, that’s even better.”
At the end of the day it’s about having fun and doing something creative.
