Hearing Damage on the rise thanks to earphones
Hearing damage is on the rise thanks to the consistent use of ear phones that are deeply jammed into the ears.
According to a study, nearly thirty percent of the teens in the research have experienced hearing loss. The line about hearing damage caused by the use of ear phones is an old story that you have probably heard for as long as you can remember.
But according to this new study, thirty percent of teens have hearing damage and suffer from a condition known as tinnitus which is a buzzing or ringing in the ears. The research was carried out using hearing tests on one hundred and seventy students aged between eleven and seventeen years old.
EDM the biggest culprit…
“It’s a growing problem and I think it’s going to get worse. My personal view is that there is a major public health challenge coming down the road in terms of difficulties with hearing.” said Larry Roberts, co-author of the study. He is a senior researcher in the department of psychology, neuroscience and behaviour at McMaster University, said in a statement.
The World Health Organization has also warned that more than one billion young people are at risk of hearing loss thanks to portable music devices and loud music at night clubs and parties; particularly at electronic dance music festivals where the sound levels are around 120 decibels for hours on end.
According to a hearing specialist, smartphones are a main culprit for the hearing damage calamity. He wasn’t involved in the study but his perspective has been noted.
“You [once] had a Walkman with two AA batteries and headphone thongs that went over your ears. At high volume, the sound was so distorted and the battery life was poor. Nowadays we have smartphones that are extremely complex computers with high-level fidelity.” said Dr Sreekant Cherukuri, an ear, nose, and throat specialist from Munster Indiana
To help avoid hearing damage you could try to keep to the “60/60” rule. Keep the volume on your device under 60 percent and only listen for a maximum of 60 minutes a day.
