Google Piracy– the search engine agrees to combat dodgy websites
What is Google Piracy? It’s the same as BING piracy. It is about the domination that pirate sites have on music searches.
The UK government hosted talks that resulted in Google and Bing agreeing to alter search results so that pirate sites lose their dominance. Google piracy for music searches to download music for free is one of the most common practices along with movies and TV series.
Google and Bing will now demote pirating websites from top search results. This will add a blow to new hits on these sites however those that already make use of these platforms will no doubt continue to do so.
What this means is that when you are conducting music searches you are most likely to land up on a fair site versus an illegal one. Google and Bing were threatened with legislation from the UK government which is when they decided to bend the rules.
Google piracy will be a thing of the past by June they say.
Google and Bing’s music searches unintentionally promote unlicensed sites by having them pop up in the search box.
BPI, a recording industry trade group, hailed a new voluntary code of practice for search engines which both Google and Bing have signed up to. This is the first result of change with the search engines after six years of government backed discussions.
The BPI chief executive claims that the victory is a “world first” but that it’s also not a fix all solution for piracy on music searches.
“The code will accelerate the demotion of illegal sites following notices from rights holders, and establishes ongoing technical consultation, increased co-operation and information sharing to develop and improve on the process. It will also enable new practices to be adopted where needed,” said a BPI statement.
Baroness Buscombe of the UK told Parliament two weeks ago that she wanted a working code by 1 June, or the government would introduce a statutory code of conduct on Google piracy and Bing piracy.
