Global Citizen Festival rigger dies during set-up and patrons mugged post Festival
Global Citizen Festival not all roses.
Yesterday, Sunday 2 December was meant to be a special day of great music, unity and the celebration of Mandela 100.
But even before the lights went on and the show started, the festival was quelled by the devastating death of a rigger.
Global Citizen issued the following statement:
“This afternoon in Johannesburg, a rigger working on behalf of a production partner for the Global Citizen Festival, suffered fatal injuries arising from a fall at the site.
The man has been identified as Siyabonga Ngodze, and although he was wearing all the appropriate safety gear and equipment his injuries were too severe. An investigation surrounding the incident has been opened.
Global Citizens of crime?
With a harrowing start, it’s unfortunate to report that the end was of the same tone.
South Africans have taken to social media to recall their crime experiences that happened when the festival ended.
Festival patrons awaiting transport at the Nasrec Sasol garage reported that chaos erupted when several people were robbed at knife and gunpoint.
A witness report from Times LIVE:
“There was a couple walking in front of us. The next thing we knew the girl started screaming. They tried to grab whatever she was holding. It was such a mess. Everybody started running in between cars to avoid the thugs. Mind you, there were no police in the vicinity at all,” said Jamie-Lee Markgraaff.
According to reports, police left the area after the last performance, which goes against standard protocol (and is just a ridiculous notion for such an event).
It appears that the Global Citizen Festival obtained the opposite of their goal of unity.
#GlobaCitizenFestivalSA so heart broke by what was happening at sasol garage and outside the stadium I even tripped and fell. Thank God no one fell on me. Witness so many robberies. Police did nothing.

If you are still leaving the stadium don’t go past Sasol, they are robbing people at gun point.

Wow counted 17 muggings at the Sasol at FNB. Plus 2 stabbings and a smash and grab. #GlobaCitizenFestivalSA

Guys! We are huddled at Sasol garage and its so fucking dangerous. Groups of tsotsi’s run towards the crowds to cause commotion and then grab people’s shit and taunt them. Everyone so scared and them literally laughing and enjoying the chaos
