Friend Finder – The drone that will find you
Friend Finder is a new marketing idea by Pepsi Max in the ‘States and from watching the video, the idea seems to be that by using their app you can locate your lost friends at a big festival.
Friend Finder is exactly the type of marketing global brands love; the concept is simple really. Spend a shitload of money developing something novel that taps into the current youth trend and makes sure it’s so cool or useful that the youth all adopt it. But admittedly the technology behind it is probably not quite as simple.
With the proliferation of massive EDM festivals around the world, these party goers are at their most impressionable so the marketing miles Pepsi Max could gain are rather substantial.
On the surface the idea also sounds solid. At massive events your chances of decent if any cellphone reception is minimal so if you lose your mates for hours, this Friend Finder can help you find them.
The drone flies around and at your request via the app points out your friends. How exactly it works is unclear but the video does show people sitting in a control room watching over the festival and controlling the drones.
Now that’s creepy! One of the big appeals of music festivals is to be able to lose yourself for a couple of days, or even one night, not be watched over by drones!
The adage ‘Big Brother is watching you’ has now become Friend Finder is watching you!
I’m not sure if there are actually festivals quite big enough to warrant something like Friend Finder in South Africa although the concept is novel enough for a brand like Pepsi to want to do it.
Rocking the Daisies is the best candidate no doubt since they are inundated with brands doing activations everywhere and it is the one event I’ve found myself walking around for hours looking for mates at times.
It’s all still a little creepy though…
