Former SABC DJ arrested in the Mother City after drug raid
A former SABC DJ is expected in court today.
The Hawks have swooped in and arrested a popular club and radio DJ after finding a large number of narcotics in his Tamboerskloof home.
For now, the name of the suspect has not been officially revealed until he appears in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court today.
As with any piece of juicy gossip, there are countless rumours. One is that his co-conspirator is his wife, but according to the Hawks spokesperson Captain Philani Nkwalase, two men were arrested, aged 39 and 48. (Everyone is probably looking up SABC DJs matching those ages.)
Online speculation as to who the DJ is, has been rife online and our sources have confirmed who the SABC DJ arrested is.
We shall release his name once charges are brought against him. If speculation is accurate, he is a stalwart of the Cape Town house scene and used to own one of the Mother City’s most iconic record stores, founded in the 90’s and was open for business for over a decade.
UPDATE:::
It can now be revealed that the DJ arrested is Dino Michael. Dino is a resident DJ at Chinchilla in Camps Bay and was a Good Hope FM DJ until he left recently. His show was called ‘Godfather’s House.’
Dino has been involved with the house music scene in Cape Town since the nineties and been DJing since the 80’s.
The 48 year old DJ owned one of Cape Town’s most iconic record shops – DJ Syndicate which dates back as far as 1991 and he also released a string of deep house compilations in the early to mid 2000’s.
He has been released on R 50,000 bail and his wife, Nina, also arrested was released on R 10,000 bail. They live in Tamboerskloof and have a son in Grade 6.
Drug Jockey?
Captain Nkwalase said a joint intelligence-driven operation – which combined teams from the Hawks’ South African Narcotics Enforcement Bureau (SANEB) and Crime Intelligence- led to the arrest.
“The assortment of drugs that includes cocaine and MDMA‚ as well as the cash amount‚ were recovered during an intelligence driven disruptive operation in a house in Hastings Street‚ Cape Town‚” said Nkwalase.
The cash found amounted to R300 000- no small change. The value of the drugs is estimated to be R 2.6 million.
It is reported that Michael recently left his job at the SABC, probably to pursue the lucrative career of being a Drug Jockey. 🙂 I guess that’s also not working out for him.
The story will unfold further for sure with Dino Michael, the former SABC DJ arrested for drugs, having plead not guilty this morning.
