Eternal Flow generates endless techno/deep house variations
Listen to endless techno/deep house variations with Eternal Flow.
Russian artist Peter Serkin’s Eternal Flow is a generative radio station and portable device that churns out endless techno and deep house variations without the involvement of human producers- but it’s not machine learning.
In an interview with cdm, Serkin explains how it works.
“I used to make deep and techno for a long period of time,” he tells them, “so I have some production patterns.” He basically took those existing patterns, added some randomization, and instead of linear playback as you’d expect you get music generated over a longer period of time with additional variation.
That’s not all. While the first version used one-shot snippets, “later I coded my own synth engine,” Petr tells them. This means that the synthesized sounds save on sample space in the mobile version.
Generate that techno flow
You can run a simple version of the application in your web browser.
You can listen to recorded sessions via SoundCloud.
But possibly the most interesting way to run this generator is through its self-contained portable device that’s like a never-ending iPod. Check out how it works through this video (turn on subtitles.)
[youtube_sc url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X9_mu5EaLYM&feature=youtu.be”]Although the hardware is on a limited run, you can download the Android app via the Google Play store complete with a bpm slider.
It’s important to note that this isn’t machine learning, but rather classic generative music. It’s something any producer can apply to their work and live shows. Instead of keeping fixed patterns for a live set, you can use randomisation and other rules to create variations on the fly.
The use of Eternal Flow and other generative music apps will either put jobs at risk or free up creativity, depending on what you make of it.
