As the French reggae dub group continues their African tour, so continues their inspiration and love for the continent, which hit a high in Abidjan in the Ivory Coast.
Recently the group participated in the Anoumabo Festival of Urban Music (Femua 2018), which was launched in 2008 by Ivorian musical group Magic System and has since become one of the biggest festivals in Sub-Saharan Africa, promoting urban music rhythms.
Children of the Ghetto
One of the singers of the group highlighted the pilgrimage-like nature of the participation, likening it to being in Kingston, Jamaica:
“For me, it was like a kind of pilgrimage. We went to Kingston, Jamaica, but Abidjan is also the reggae capital in Africa,” he said.
During their stay, they linked up with singer Alif Naaba, known as the ‘Barefoot Prince of Burkina Faso,” and the kora player Massa Dembele, both from Burkina Faso.
The collaboration resulted in a moving acoustic rendition of the group’s version of the song “Enfants des ghettos / Children of the Ghetto” that will be released as a music video on May 5th, just weeks ahead of the group’s arrival in Southern Africa. (Yes, they’re coming to SA!)
Music sheds light and unites, which what the festival aims to do as they illuminate issues affecting the African continent, which this year put focus on illegal immigration.
