Watch this documentary on women in the Lagos electronic music scene
The documentary follows three boss women in the Lagos electronic music scene.
Assurance is a new documentary exploring the music scene in Lagos, Nigeria, and the visibility of women in the industry.
The documentary reveals obstacles faced by female DJs both on and beyond the dancefloor, as well as how they defiantly navigate through these issues in pursuit of their career ambitions and fulfilment.
Assurance was put together by London-born, Berlin-based DJ Juba, whose pursuit for new perspectives on the gender debate led her to Lagos, Nigeria where she connected with three DJ’s: Sensei Lo, DJ Yin and DJ Ayizan in order to get an insight into their experiences in the context of Lagos.
Despite her familiarity with the impact of gender roles and patriarchy in Nigeria, connecting with these three women enabled Juba to explore the ramifications of societal expectations and judgements in greater depth.
Assurance
“’Assurance’ was conceived out of my desire to find new perspectives in the music industry’s gender imbalance debate,” Juba has told Crack Magazine. “Since I started DJing in 2016, I’ve only been able to look at the topic through the European lens and the discourse, in general, is overwhelmingly dominated by voices from the Global North.”
She continues: “Going to Lagos and immersing myself in conversation with the three DJs exposed me to a different set of narratives in a totally new, often ignored context.
Stories like theirs are necessary for enriching and broadening the conversation around women in music and prove the importance of wider representation when discussing issues that are relevant to people all over the world.”
