Celebrate your heritage with DJ Maphorisa “Clan Beats” EP
DJ Maphorisa “Clan Beats” is out now via Castle Milk Stout.
What with it being Heritage Month and all in South Africa, why not groove to your roots with this new EP from one of SA’s premier beatmakers, Maphorisa?
Released via Castle Milk Stout, the aptly titled Clan Beats is comprised of four tracks each exploring a South African ethnic group by pairing up contemporary musicians with praise singers. The cultures included are Xhosa (Thandiswa Mazwai, Zolani Mkiva), Tswana (KB, Stoan), Zulu (Sjava, Madala Kunene), Tsonga (Sho Madjozi, Dr Sithole).
“I was really excited, it reminds us of our culture and stuff so I said, you know what, it’s been a while. Even me I’m from the urban side so it made me want to know about my culture so it really was a dope thing to be a part of,” Maphorisa said about his involvement in the project.
Our heritage is our heartbeat
Clan Beats is certainly worth a listen, with Maphorisa’s wide range of soundscapes perfectly suited to carry through the equally varied delivery styles of the artists on the tracks.
“The EP is quite unique and very well composed – a true mix of the young and old coming together to connect on common ground. The music fuses clan praises, which pay homage to the past with new-age sounds that the current audience in the music scene identifies with. It synchronously creates a new sound which will show future generations how they too can celebrate their heritage,” said ABInBev vice president of marketing: Africa Zone, Andrea Quaye.
“The Clan Beats EP appeals to different audiences who will be brought together by the music genres, the artists’ personal journeys, embracing diverse cultures and the coming together of generations to discuss and understand the importance culture,” said Quaye.
