DJ Fresh nearly walked away from his radio dream
DJ Fresh hasn’t always been so fresh.
It turns out that celebrities are normal people who face rejection; in fact many of them struggle for years, banging on proverbial doors, before the door to success finally opens.
Now, DJ ‘Grootman’ Fresh is one of SA’s most successful radio personalities, hosting the very popular breakfast show on Metro FM.
Recently the star opened up to his listeners about how he knocked on doors and dropped off demos at radio stations for 5 years before getting his big break.
At one point he felt so defeated that he stopped sending demos altogether.
“I pretty much stopped and then the YFM opportunity appeared. But I had stopped sending demos because I was like nobody is responding. Nobody is calling.”
Before he got his break at YFM he decided to rather focus his energy on school.
“After five years of trying and trying, I stopped because I was like let me focus on school. So that is what I did, and then the light shone.”
Persistence at your assistance
Previously Fresh has spoken out about the difficulties faced when trying to break into the industry, saying that talent gets lost in the Insta-fame and tweleb age we’re living in at the moment.
“There are people that are passionate about radio and they’re not getting gigs. If you have a million followers you’ll get onto radio,” he said at a magazine launch last year.
He also believes this to be prominent in the acting industry.
An eye for talent and a giver of chances, Fresh has been actively working on giving people a break into the industry through mentoring people as well as handing out bursaries with Boston Media House.
DJ Fresh, thank you for not giving up and lending your voice to SA.
