Derrick Carter kicked out of Berghain DJ booth
Derrick Carter was kicked out of a Berghain DJ booth after his set and he took to social media to share his story. Berghain is famous for being unfriendly and obsessively exclusive but you’d never readily assume that this sort of hospitality would extend to its talent; particularly not one of the pioneers of the very genre that Berghain worships.
Derrick Carter played at the club’s Panorama Bar alongside artists such as Alinka, Carl Craig, and Maceo Plex. The line-up was an inclusive list of all-stars that was put together for an interesting night of music and partying.
When his set was finished, Derrick Carter noted that he was “hanging out in the DJ booth”. He was there with Carl Craig and his wife. One of the bouncers approached the three of them and ordered Carter and Carl Craig’s wife to get out.
Don’t mess with the bouncer…
When Carter tried to explain that he had just played before and that the other person was Carl Craig’s wife, the bouncer wasn’t impressed and insisted that thy get out anyway.
The bouncer replied… “Yeah, but you’re not the only ones” and with that he kicked Carl’s wife out too.
This sparked a conversation between Felix da Housecat, Seth Troxler, and Jesse Rose. The artists allude to the undercurrent of racism in the city’s nightlife scene. Felix da Housecat had at one point even been denied entry to Berghain. Seth Troxler and Jesse Rose chimed in with the hashtag #blackdjsmatter and saying that “some things never change”.
The world of dance music is continuously divided by race, despite the fact that people off races and cultures are drawn to it. With incidents such as the ill treatment of black DJs, Berghain is shining a bright light on their lack of cultural integration.
“So I’m hanging out in the DJ booth at Panorama Bar with Carl Craig and his wife after my set. Dude comes up and says, “You got to get out”. I told him that I was DJing before Carl and that this is his wife. He says, “Yeah, but you’re not the only ones.” and kicks her out too. #NotSmartBar” reads Derrick Carter’s Facebook post.
