Darkstar to be hosted by Encounters Documentary Festival
Darkstar from Warp Records will be at this year’s Encounters Documentary Film Festival in South Africa. The Encounters festival is South Africa’s longest running documentary film festival.
About Encounters
The festival will run over the space of ten days from the 2nd to the 12th of June 2016. They feature a wide range of relevant and topical documentaries that either form part of or promote conversations around sociopolitical and pop culture issues in South Africa. Going out to see these films is always a rewarding and richly entertaining experience.
This year they have widened their scope to include other forms of creative and artistic expression. In their upcoming event they will have a variety of non-fiction storytelling, virtual reality and immersive media, visual arts, and music.
Darkstar
In a move that is lined up to charge the festival with a fresh and young energy, Darkstar will be performing two live shows.
The Darkstar duo is made up of James Young and Aiden Whalley and their sound has been a marked one in the UK scene.
Their latest EP titled ‘Foam Island’ was inspired by the themes of ambition and hope against the odds in the new century.
“We wanted to talk about life for people in their late teens and early 20’s in 2015, but avoid that ‘grim-up-north’ clichéd perception. We wanted a full picture, not just something that was heavy on the heart, but something that reflected a positive as well as an ambivalent side to how young people feel right now. These themes should be recognisable to anyone in the world right now.” said James Young
In their performance they will use the concept of Foam Island, making it central to their two shows in South Africa. They will rework the EP with voice recordings and experiences of young people in SA and this will also form part of their performances.
