Dance Music Blog – DJane runs a Beauty Contest for Female DJs
A dance music blog known as DJane is running something they are calling a beauty contest for female DJs.
The name of the website, DJane leads you to believe that it’s a site aimed at the promotion and celebration of female DJ talent. The name “DJane” is akin to the hip hop version of “Femcee” – and diminutive forms for female versions of anything were always kind of unnecessary to me. But anyway, DJane like Femcee is used to describe females in the business.
The website features one-dimensional femininity and appears to be one of those “sex sells” sites using DJing to legitimise its presence online.
Of course, there is nothing wrong with female artists being as sexy and provocative as they wish. However when a website claiming to have female DJs’ best interests at heart hosts a beauty contest known as the “MissDjaneMag award” it would seem that this traffic hungry site is looking to exploit the growth of EDM and aspiring DJs in order to get people to click through.
The criteria for those taking part in the beauty contest makes no mention of music and instead focuses on looks and fashion sense. And the site will “choose the most beautiful, sexy and charming djane.”
Whenever a scene explodes onto the global arena, there will always be opportunists lurking about such as the people who created this site. It’s another sad reflection of our fame hungry society that sees the desperate go to any and all measures just to be talked and blogged about. Not to mention the rampant and blatant modern sexism that enables the existence of beauty contests as a whole and now this ridiculous DJ/beauty contest too.
Reportedly online responses to this contest have been overwhelmingly negative and last year’s winner, DJ Mew refuses to answer questions regarding her DJ/beauty contest award for fear of not being taken seriously.
DJ Mew’s manager explained… “With all the hard work that we put towards Mew being taken seriously as a DJ we feel that an article about the ‘beauty contest’ aspect of DJane Mag will only go against what we’ve accomplished.”
