CTEMF 2017 Workshops start today
The CTEMF 2017 workshops have already kicked off at locations around the city of Cape Town. The three day series of CTEMF 2017 workshops is a way to bring together electronic music pioneers, though leaders, and the local scene’s musicians who are eager to share ideas and learn new things.
It’s an opportunity to network and grow outside of the festival itself. The CTEMF 2017 workshops create a space where you can broaden your perspective by getting a window into what happens behind the scenes and in the studio.
During the CTEMF 2017 workshops attendees and facilitators reflect on the current state and history of electronic music globally. It’s these workshops that distinguish CTEMF as a world class music festival in South Africa. In an all encompassing way, CTEMF brings together the pleasures that music can bring with a definitive focus on nurturing and growing local music and its impact on the rest of the world.
The ‘Open End Sessions’ is a great way for you to learn about the histories of differing electronic music sub-genres and the subcultures that go with them.
This year the line-up will include Youngsta, Ninjatune founders Coldcut, and a rundown of the Hardware of House.
(Roland’s famous TR808, 909 and TB303) and a chat with 021 Live – Fosta and DJ OD’s township dance culture movement. You will get to take shots with and learn from Ready D, ANG and more. These workshops will be held at Cape Town’s Red Bull Studios on Bree Street and Guga S’Thebe in Langa.
Full schedule:
Tuesday 7th February 2017
Location: RED BULL STUDIOS CPT
First session: 12:00-17:00
Artist 2.1
We’re building on last year’s Artist 2.0 sessions by inviting up-and-coming DJs, producers and musicians to participate in conversations centered around the ever-evolving online world. Industry professionals will talk about building, maintaining and connecting with platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Soundcloud, YouTube and music blogs. Goodhope FM’s Ready D and DJ Eazy will discuss the process of submitting music to be played on radio, as well as how to register music with SAMRO. ANG will shed light on Syncopate; a project which provides local music to the international artists performing at CTEMF. All attending artists will have a professional headshot taken by the Red Bull Studios Cape Town photographer.
There is limited space for these sessions, so anyone interested should RSVP studio@za.redbull.com and answer the following questions:
- What is your artist/band name and what kind of music do you make? 2. Why are you interested in attending the sessions?
Break: 13:00-14:00
Afternoon session: 18:00-20:00 A Discussion with YoungstaCPT
Youngsta is a voice for Capetonians and a star in the mainstream scene. He will chat about his journey and his views on the local landscape.
Wednesday 8th February 2017
Location: RED BULL STUDIOS CPT
First session: 12:00-16:00
Track Search
This is a simple demo-listening session introduced in 2016. It’s open to anyone and artists are invited to bring one or two songs on a memory stick or CD. You’ll come up, tell us about yourself and play your track for the artists present. It’s not a feedback session, but there is a possibility of that discussion happening. The focus is mainly on connecting with other open- minded artists to showcase the music you’re making.
Second session: 16:00-18:00
Hardware of House
Learn about house music’s incredible history from Chicago in the 1980s and its influence on modern electronic music like techno, bass and trance. House has also changed the way artists looked at making music, using affordable drum-machines, synthesisers, samplers and sequencers to create music that was initially considered outlandish before becoming popular. They will look at the history of the genre in the 80s and early 90s, focusing on the influence of machines such as the Roland TR808, 909 and TB303.
Evening session: 18:00-20:00
A Discussion with Coldcut
Coldcut are an English electronic music duo composed of Matt Black and Jonathan More. They are credited as being the pioneers of pop sampling in the 80s. Beyond being a production duo, Coldcut are the founders of an independent record label in London called Ninja Tune. They encourage finding innovative ways to use software and interactive technology.
Thursday 9th February 2017
Location: Guga S’thebe, Langa
First session: 12:00-14:00
021 Live
021 Records, headed by DJ Fosta and DJ OD, are a Langa-based crew of DJs, producers and musicians shaping Cape Town’s house, Kwaito and sjokojoko scenes. Their roots are in live performance and they focus on musicality and playing instruments. This workshop is in Guga S’thebe, where they’ll record and produce a track live in conjunction with the audience. The song will be produced and mastered after the workshop, with the separates shared online for anyone to remix.
Second session: 14:00-16:00
The Electronic Ecosystem
The Association for Electronic Music is a non-profit trade association created to represent the interests of companies and individuals in Electronic Dance Music. Representatives from AFEM, Kavir Magan and Ralf Kollmann (from Mobilee) will be joined by Pierre-Marie Oullion from Nuits Sonores and Jesler Amerins from ADE. They’ll chat about the global electronic music industry and the role South Africa has to play, before answering questions on the topic.
Afternoon session: 17:00-18:00
A Discussion with Kid Fonque & Jullian Gomes
We’ll be chatting to two of South Africa’s most established and influential artists. Kid Fonque has a long history as a DJ, label manager, event organiser, producer and radio host. He has a reputation for being one of the strongest electronic music artists in the world, with roots in soul, funk, bossanova, house and hip-hop. On the other hand, Jullian Gomes has deep house finesse that few possess. His critically acclaimed debut album Late Dreamer and collaborations with At Jazz showcase the timelessness of his sound.
