Check out this psychedelic dome at Coachella by Chrysalis
Coachella is undoubtedly one of the biggest and best music festivals in the world. With over 100 artists to see and over 120 000 people to meet Coachella is a strong bucket list experience.
This year they offered festivalgoers an experience that was out of this world.
Inside the geodesic Antarctic dome at Coachella, attendees were to experience a psychedelic journey on a projection spanning the whole dome.
Called Chrysalis, it is an 8 minute audio-visual journey created by Obscura Digital, the team who created the light installations on the Empire State Building.
From Chrysalis, to butterfly.
Chrysalis is a step in the metamorphosis of a caterpillar to a butterfly. It is the hard, protective layer that the caterpillar resides in before emerging as a butterfly.
The Chrysalis installation at Coachella also consists of a hard, protective, dome layer wherein growth and transformation of psychedelic proportions ensue.
It begins with a “Shamanistic rite-of-passage ceremony” and journeys through the sky and beyond to the cosmos.
They also used iconic imagery related to Coachella such as the caterpillar and the giant robotic astronaut found cruising through the masses.
Attendees were so immersed that they were freaking out during the journey.
Here’s a clip of it:
[youtube_sc url=”EEq_2dq4OyM”]Joshua Pipic, the Creative Director behind the project told Creators at Vice that the idea came from the fact that open fires are not allowed at Coachella. He says “We started with the idea of campers gathering around a fire together in the wilderness, and embarking on this psychedelic experience after that.”
This may just be the beginning of something to see at other big music festivals around the world. It would be warmly welcomed at any electronic music festival.
With this installation by Obscura Digital, Coachella just climbed up higher on my bucket list and I’m sure many will agree.
