Carl Cox shares his views on Ibiza, social media and the reign of Techno
Carl Cox is the boss.
Whatever the style of electronic music you like; one name everyone knows and respects is that of Cox.
With a career that started in the eighties, it’s over 30 years later and he is still rocking dancefloors around the world.
Recently Carl undertook an interview with the Independent UK, revealing his thoughts on Ibiza, social media and the current techno takeover.
After helming a residency at Space (now closed) Ibiza for 15 years, Cox has returned to the island after 2 years away, this time for a One Night Stand show at 3 different locations.
But things aren’t the same as they used to be; “The VIP culture of it all has had an impact too, you end up having empty chairs, empty seats everywhere” because everything is so expensive.
Convo with Carl
In terms of the impact social media has had on the industry, Carl notes the change from when people had no phones, and no expectations, leading to more fun whereas as now “everything is name-dropping, and where are you and what are you doing now, here’s a selfie, here’s a boomerang shot.”
You tell your friends “wow look at that, look at the great summer I was having – on my phone.”
When it comes to the current Techno takeover, the genre pioneered by Carl, he feels the reason for the resurgence stems from people wanting something different to EDM music.
“The rave was built on energy and the excitement of it all and this desire to get lost, it’s like a new era for me now, it’s like a new day, all these DJs have decided they want to play tougher music and I’m loving it.”
