Cape Flats Film Festival & Self-Worth Talk
Cape Flats Film Festival & Self-Worth Talk will be the first annual event of its kind. The film festival forms part of the Cape Flats Uprising initiative by Emile YX?
The film festival and all the other projects under this initiative is aimed at shedding light on the goodness within the Cape Flats of which there is plenty. It’s a shift away from the negative stereotypes of what it means to be from this community. The change in thinking is required for the young people in the Cape Flats to see that there is more to their own stories than what they experience in the media.
They have taught countless young people here in South Africa and all over the world, and created the first annual Hip Hop holiday programme that kept the youth busy doing positive things back in 1996.
More events that they have created are African Hip Hop Indaba, Battle Of The Year, Shut Up Just Dance, Our Hip Hop Festival, Freestyle Session, R16, Up The Rock, Surf Day, and Positive Poster Day. They have started magazines and published books, created documentaries, and plays such as Break, Mixing It Up & Ons Bou as well as encouraging young people to read and write their own stories.
Planned Activities for Cape Flats Film Festival
(1) Pre-Festival Screening of the Afrikaaps documentary at schools and community centres in preparation for the actual festival. Participants in the Afrikaaps documentary will be at each school to do a Q&A after each screening. The young audience will be given worksheets and the script to encourage the content of Afrikaaps. This will take place between the 27th July and the 10th August 2015.
(2) The Cape Flats Film Festival is set to happen from the 16th August – 23rd August.
(3) Cape Flats Best Music Video Award 2015 CFFF will collect music videos to share and play to each community, where they will decide via vote which video was the best and deserves the Award
(4) Workshops/Talks & Q&As. They currently speaking to people working in the field to come and share their experiences with the youth, as well as stars in documentaries and films to speak after the screenings to share knowledge and information with the learners.
