Not just a party, Boom Festival made positive environmental changes
Here is how Boom Festival is promoting sustainability on a social level:
Boom is one of the biggest and most sought-after festivals on the Psy-trance calendar, and besides throwing a kick-ass party they are also serious about environmental sustainability.
-Out of 30 suppliers providing materials for the canteen that feeds the long term staff, 22 were local, thus supporting local trade.
-Boom also grew more than 750 kg of fruit and vegetables to be served at the staff canteen.
The Boom Karuna Project is a social initiative which shares a percentage of revenues with a nearby community in Idanha-a-Nova.
Their inclusivity program provides services for those registered under the Special Needs program. (Includes shuttles, a special camping zone and a support team available 24/7.)
National and local impact
With Portugal’s high unemployment rate, it only makes sense that between October 2017 and October 2018, 84% of people working for Boom were Portuguese (214 people.)
The NGO Django & Eco Tech Hub area hosted inspiring projects, organisations, collective action movements and individuals who came forward to present their eco projects. In total, there were 37 workshops and presentations, and 13 NGOs kept a stand during the whole week long.
Two of their main environmental campaigns for 2018 focused on ‘Save the Drop’ and ‘Skip on Plastic,’ aiming to raise awareness of water saving practices and a more conscious approach towards our use of plastic. This led to the increase in number of free water points across Boomland to a total of 35 and aimed at encouraging Boomers to refill their reusable water containers.
Their reforestation project has led to the planning of 720 new trees at Boomland (all using organic methods), 40% of ALL waste produced at Boom Fest was either recycled or decomposed into organic compost.
The list goes on and on, check out their website.
The point is; what you put in you get out and ultimately we need to be putting everything into caring for our Earth, even if we are at a party.
Boom Festival has put their words into action and they show no sign of slowing down.
