Billboard interview Black Motion which could mean great global exposure
In an incredible move for international exposure, Billboard interview Black Motion.
This is something that must surely be a highlight for the duo and their goals to break the global market.
If Billboard interview Black Motion who could be next from South Africa we wonder.
The feature covers what the two artists think of uniting local house music and more.
“Our use of traditional drums in our music is what identifies us as Black Motion. Our connection with live drumming has in many ways defined us musically. We grew up in Soshanguve in the ’90s when house was beginning to explode. The difference between us and other producers back then though, was that whilst they wanted to replicate what they were hearing we wanted to make it our own,” said Thabo Mabogwane.
As Billboard interview Black Motion, they talk about how making South African house music was always more of a factor to them than simply making house music. They wanted to make their sound distinctly identifiable which is why they found themselves leaning towards this particular creative path of making music. They used local languages and instruments in their music to make it clear where the music was coming from.
South African House for the win
This is of course a pioneering move in the celebration and promotion of music that is authentically and unapologetically South African.
“If we look back through our musical history, many huge artists have sampled South African music, particularly in America but lots of people still do not know where those sounds came from. Artists such as Ladysmith Black Mambazo have been sampled countless times by American producers but because the US is seen as the capital of the music industry people think that’s where these sounds originate. It’s up to people like us to bring it back around and say ‘No, actually we created these sounds’,” said Mabogwane.
They aren’t the kind of musicians that are keen to copy international artists. These two will go down in history as a pair of true pioneers in local music.
Having Billboard interview Black Motion right now is a perfectly timed event since record labels in Europe and America are interested in signing the duo. These Soshanguve boys are making all of us pretty proud.
