VIDEO: Andancas festival evacuated as 422 cars ablaze
The Andancas festival in Portugal was forced to end after four hundred and twenty two cars were ablaze.
Reportedly, the fire started in one car and spread to the others and the nearby bushes behind the parking lot.
“The fire started in a vehicle and spread rapidly to other vehicles and then to the surrounding bush.” Said Carlos Guerra, Portugese National Civil Protection Authority
The fire is said to have been a wild one with no arson suspected as yet. This conclusion was drawn up after the police and insurance investigators assessed the damage. However, Belo Costa, district commander of Portalegre Relief Operations, said that the fire might have been caused by an “explosion in a vehicle” at the park.
Fortunately there were no casualties at the Andancas festival fire scene and around four thousand people were evacuated to safety. The dance music Andancas festival took place in Castelo de Vide, more or less 245 km from Lisbon city centre last week Wednesday.
Cars were exploding
It’s quite bizarre how something this devastating could happen to you while you are out partying. It is a relief to know that no one got hurt and that the emergency infrastructure set up by the organizers could efficiently get everyone to safety.
The cars kept exploding one after the other and it probably sounded a lot like something out of a world war two movie.
Musician Pedro Mestre told broadcaster TVI that the cars exploded one after the other “like popcorn” as the fire spread quickly through the lot.
The fire began at around three pm and it took one hundred and sixty fire fighters, 42 vehicles, and four air vessels to help put it out.
This was the twenty first year of the Andancas festival. It kicked off on the Monday and they were expected around forty thousand people to attend the event until Sunday.
