An AI composed pop song known as “Daddy’s Car” has been created using the Flow Machines software which uses big data for sheet music along with a style prompt from a human to come up with the melody and harmony.
The integration of artificial intelligence is starting to take form in our daily modern lives. Driverless cars are high up on my favourites list and I personally cannot wait to be driven around like a billionaire. Computer systems are beginning to learn new things without human interaction. This is reminiscent of the guy who fell in love with his operating system in the fictional movie ‘Her’ voiced by Scarlett Johansson. The OS (love interest) starts out as a pretty linear and straight forward consciousness. But as she grows and reads she (it) develops her intellect at a much more rapid rate than her flesh and bone limited boyfriend.
As an artificial intelligence she is able to read whole books in seconds and so her knowledge and understanding of life and the world supersedes that of a human. The couple eventually breaks up because the OS gets upgraded and he finds out that she had been having similar relationships with thousands of other humans. She also spoke to something like six hundred people at the same time.
AI is an exciting prospect and it’s also somewhat eerie when considering how many movies have previously warned us about how robots are going to take over the world and turn humans into zoo animals.
An AI composed pop song may leave the fledgling music composer or producer with a feeling of dread. If computers can compose music now, would we even need the talents of music producers in the future? No one can tell for sure what it is going to be like in twenty years, but we can all take turns guessing and placing bets.
