Watch: Distant Dancefloors, looks at the effect of lockdown on DJ/Producers
Distant Dancefloors is a 30-minute documentary that looks at the impact Covid-19 has had on the global electronic music scene.
The documentary features Blond:ish, Eats Everything, Honey Dijon, Luciano, Rebuke and Fatboy Slim (briefly) who all give their opinions of the lockdown, how they have been coping, how they see the future panning out and their different views on streaming.
My take-outs from Distant Dancefloors
I think the biggest success of Distant Dancefloors is that it reminds one that every DJ/Producer no matter whether you play locally or internationally has been affected by Covid-19.
If the purpose of the doccie was to create a sense of community and make one feel a part of something bigger, then job done.
At the end of the day no matter how big a name you are we all do the same thing; stand in a DJ booth and play music to people who (mainly) want to dance.
Distant Dancefloors also looks at the emotional impact of DJs not getting their regular dose of endorphin rushes from playing to dancefloors – yes it’s a real thing.
Most of the artists featured wax philosophically about using the down time to re-assess their lifestyles, and there’s a general consensus that nobody likes to turn down a booking, so they were probably pushing harder than they should have before lockdown.
The most interesting point for me, made by Luciano, is that even the international artists are going to have to look at playing locally first, because it’s likely to be a long road back for full-on international travel.
This should hearten local artists as we’re likely to see more space on line-ups with no international headliners for the immediate future of clubbing and outdoor festivals.
Anyway, Distant Dancefloors is a good watch and worth 30 minutes of your time if you are a DJ/Producer.
It does give one a sense that, for now, we’re all stuck in the same boat and let’s hope that boat doesn’t sink further.
Enjoy…
PS: Honey Dijon is such a boss. Just love her vibe. 🙂
