“The club scene is playing music and battle scene is making music. I like to incorporate everything when I do a set. When you play in the club the judging panel Is bigger…”
Cape Town has been notorious for their distinctive breed of Hip Hop DJ that surpasses the norm; applying aspects of turntablism along with the signature party rocking characteristics found around the city and surrounding area’s club scene.
They often go under the radar outside of the city but that takes nothing away from the technical abilities they obviously possess. Codax is one of those DJs who has had a presence on the Cape Town DJ scene for way over a decade, steadily dominating the battle scene top 3 for the past 5 years. He holds numerous titles that prove his capability, (believe me I have witnessed it) and can… well does… rock regular gigs throughout the city, all through the week, as well as a weekly, weekend slot on one of the city’s biggest radio stations. He recently released his debut mixtape The Next Level that showcases amongst others, some of his fellow Kuilsriver musicians. Due to busy schedules our interview was done via social networks, email and telephone, proof the man’s been out there, doing his thing….
When and how did you get into DJ’ing?
I started 18 years ago. Living in Strand and surrounded by DJ’s who specialized in House Music. I started off playing house music, but as the music progressed my style also progressed. I currently play all types of tracks but prefer Hip Hop. I learned a lot from those guys that are now perceived as “Old School DJ’s”.
You are a combination of club and battle DJ; which do you prefer or is it a process of combining the two?
It’s a combination of both. The club scene is playing music and battle scene is making music. I like to incorporate everything when I do a set. When you play in the club the judging panel is bigger, you have a club full of people that you have to impress. Today’s average club-goers are very well educated in the art of music selection and mixing.
You have made a name for yourself on the local battle scene. What titles have you been rewarded with for these efforts?
3 x African Hip Hop Champ (2006, 2008, 2009) Hennessey Artistry Battle Champ (2007), Cape DMC Regional Champ (2009), Cape vs. Da Rest, (Sprite Last man standing) (2009).
You recently released a mixtape; let us in on the process that went into that and who features on it?
I started working on this project last year. Moving into the production side of things was just ‘The Next Level’ of my career, hence the name of the mixtape The Next Level. The mixtape features some brilliant upcoming artists like Cream, CMoney, Explozè, KG Express, Khalil, Lindsay, K2 and MC Cole who are all currently working on their own individual projects. On the producing side I had the honour to work with Denver Hart and Thermostat.
