Pete Bones Interview ahead of ORIGIN 2017
In this Pete Bones interview we catch up with the imitable DJ/producer ahead of this weekend’s Origin Festival on Elandskloof Farm, Heldestroom.
But tickets to ORIGIN here
Pete is something of a local here in South Africa, as he is in Tampa – Florida, Zanzibar – Tanzania and several other parts of the world where he visits regularly with fresh tunes and regular gigs.
The owner of Red Ant Records will be spinning his selection of house and techno on Saturday afternoon on the BEATS Floor at Origin from 17:30 – 19:00 – it’s a set well worth catching. Pete is a true purveyor of all things underground so expect to hear fresh and [possibly] unheard tunes being dropped throughout.
The Beats Floor has a tasty lineup along with three more internationals aside from Pete. Look forward to sets from Raxon, Dirty Doering and Eitan Reiter as well as a whole host of Cape Town’s finest.

I caught up for a very short but, as always, interesting little chat…
You spend a lot of time in the USA. Is that where you play the bulk of your gigs each year and…. Why USA?
Pete Bones interview: Not a lot of people know this but I actually born in Texas and grew up as the son of a Bronco Billy rider. I was to be the heir to the saddle but in the early 80s I did a reverse cowboy, I ran away from the circus…
These past several months must have been interesting with the presidential race and Trump winning etc. I know you take an interest in global events and politics. What was the general mood like there over this period and did you find a lot of party people quite invested in it all?
Pete Bones interview: No, I find that ‘party people’ have trouble investing time in anything at all. The non party people were talking about it, a lot… depending on my mood I will invest some time and emotion into it, but I don’t find it difficult to withdraw and carry on.
Was 2016 a good year for house & techno music generally, you’d say?
Pete Bones interview: This might be a question better asked of someone who cares more about what other people think. In my microcosmic Bones bubble it was a great year. And as far as I’m aware all the really shit electronic music was played at the same places so win-win…
And for you personally? On a scale of 1 – 10 how was 2016 for Pete Bones?
Pete Bones interview: I’m a sucker for a ‘marks out of 10 scale’…Hmmm, I’d say it was a 7.83
You do spend a good part of your year away from home; how and where do you write new tunes from? Home base or on the road?
Pete Bones interview: On the road, especially as I don’t really have a home. It’s become more of a constant and perpetuating cycle. I write on my laptop, send off for vocals where applicable, and some analog outboard midi-audio parts, then re-write them into the track, and then mixdown when I can get onto some proper speakers
Favourite gig and city for 2016?
Pete Bones interview: This is hard, there were 3 that really stood out; Kompression in New Orleans on Halloween, my birthday at the Castle in Tampa in May and the What The? festival in Devon, UK in August.
Worst experience of 2016 while on the road…
Pete Bones interview: This one is easy; babysitting for a worried husband on mother’s day, at 7am, straight after a gig, while he went to try and find his wife (the promoter) who had disappeared with the car (and gotten into an accident).
Origin 2017 is upon us and once again you will feature on the BEATS Floor. You have a really nice timeslot too – late afternoon just before sunset. Do you prefer daytime or nighttime at festivals (for playing & partying)?
Pete Bones interview: Ha! I was just talking about this. To me festivals have always been about the pressure building as the day goes on, but I guess at Origin the floor is pumping from early afternoon. I will take a view on it before I start, but my preference is to go hard and twisted. To be honest, when you play music that has been produced with the heart and soul that you require, it doesn’t matter as much. For me, I play when it’s dark, as a rule…
