Nora en Pure Interview – SA born Swiss raised
I have a lot of respect for South African dance music artists like Goldfish and Black Coffee – they’re strongly representing our country!”
Nora en Pure is a South African born, Swiss raised DJ/producer who recently came home for a three city tour over Easter weekend.
She says her local party sets were influenced by what she picked up on her recent tour across North America and specifically in party city, Miami.
In this Nora en Pure interview she tells us how her love for Africa turned into daydreams about her birth place and how these roots have played a hand in shaping her creativity. She talks to us about playing at Webster Hall in New York, her new track with Redondo and her respect for Goldfish and Black Coffee.
When you were working on your hit track ‘Come With Me’ out in 2013 did you think it would do as well as it did? And what inspired the creativity behind the production?
Nora en Pure Interview: No, I really didn’t think it would, so it came as a big surprise! When I am creating a track, I like to think of other countries and cultures, usually places with a tropical or beach vibe to it. I have been living in Switzerland since I was four years old, so I spent quite some time day dreaming about South Africa and the wilderness. I like to project those feelings into my productions.
You have played at Webster Hall in New York, Ultra Miami and Mysteryland in the States. What did you take away from these experiences individually and in your opinion what makes each of them special?
Nora en Pure Interview: I’ve played at Webster Hall a couple of times now, and the vibe is great. New York is a great place to play, but funnily enough my favourite plays there were at festivals, such as Mysteryland USA last year. Ultra was an incredible experience, as I was able to close one of the stages and of course the people there were totally up for a good time! I think my style of music is really suited for these outdoor scenes.
What were you looking forward to most on your coming-home three city tour?
Nora en Pure Interview: I was genuinely so excited to be back! I had been looking forward to this for a long time. I come back quite often, but playing here is something that doesn’t get to happen much. As I mentioned I moved to Switzerland at four years old. As much as I love it there, I will always feel at home in South Africa.
You have an outsiders view of the local house scene as well as having something of an insider’s perspective. How does this contribute to your creativity and the way that you approach the global dance scene?
Nora en Pure Interview: I have been lucky enough to be raised in an international way, traveling around the world, and seeing things from different countries and cultures. I definitely take these experiences into my thoughts and blend different elements into my music. I have a lot of respect for South African dance music artists like Goldfish and Black Coffee – they’re strongly representing our country!
Your new track with Redondo – ‘I Got To Do’ has been played more than six hundred and forty thousand times on Soundcloud since it was posted on the site more than a month ago. How did you come about collaborating with Redondo and when can we expect your remix of Faithless’ ‘I Was Here’ to come out?
Nora en Pure Interview: ‘I Got To Do’ is perfect for this time of year, as it’s a total feel good track. I started working with the guys as we had met a few times and we liked each other’s musical style and had worked together in the past. I had started the track, but wasn’t very happy with the drop – and wanted them to bring something groovy to it! I think it brings together the best of both of our styles.
