What are your influences musically & socially?
Growing up, I was almost always locked away listening to the radio, tapes, CDs or old records as opposed to playing outside with everyone else. I was influenced by everything from Hip Hop and early Rave stuff to Michael Jackson to my collection of Miami Bass tapes. I somehow stumbled onto some Jungle tapes as a teenager and was blown away by the heavy basslines and complex drums. My love affair had begun.
Your residency ‘It came from the Jungle’ at Fiction (Cape Town) – do you see yourself as any specific animal?
I’d probably be a monkey, nothing fancy like a gorilla, just a chimpanzee or something. I like acting the fool when given the opportunity. It gets me into trouble sometimes…. LOL.
How does it feel to be selected to play at the Official Vodacom Durban July After Party 2011?
It’s a great honour to be a part of an event as respected as the Durban July!
What can fans expect from your set at the party, any surprises?
There’s a definitely a few surprises on the cards for this show. I’d love to fill you in, but it’s a “if I tell you, I’d have to kill you” James Bond type secret that’s guarded closely. I’ve come across so much insanely good music that I cannot wait to share.
While touring Europe, what unique discovery did you make about yourself musically?
Last year, before my set at Monegros Festival I was freaking out thinking I wouldn’t be able to step up to the plate on the same level as some of the other bigger names on the stage we were on. It’s quite a daunting thing stepping out in front of artists you’ve idolized for years and doing your thing. After the first 2 tunes, I calmed down and got more into the groove and ended up smashing the place. I’ve realized that tours where I’m overly nervous end up being the best shows. The better everyone else around me is, the better I want to play.
Niskerone Rezonance Festival 2010/2011
Coming from the Cape Flats – has it shaped you in any way to be the artist that you are now?
Growing up in Mitchell’s Plain wasn’t easy, its taught me to be independent and give my all to the task at hand. That’s the way I approach every single show, I play as if it’s my last show ever.
Catch Niskerone along with Spindoctor, DJ Fresh, Gareth Devore, Euphonik and Roger Goode whipping up dancefloor pumping sets to get you moving and grooving on the night!
