Monika and the ‘Ultraworld Crew‘ were responsible for Munich‘s ‘Ultraschall‘ Nightclub launched in the mid-nineties. The best memories for her didn’t always happen on the dancefloor or in the DJ booth.
“Some of the best recollections of ‘Ultraschall’ was everything really. From burning the monitor box, to our ‘air condition break’ for ten minutes during the night – our air conditioner was an open window. And of course the DJs who were so fucked up that they forgot which city they were in” she says.
She has steadily delivered great releases since 1996, and her fans stay loyal and love her for it. The key ingredient she regularly throws into the production mix when producing those divine beats is that “It comes from the heart.”
Her earlier influences reveals that she was inspired by Funk and Hip Hop as well as House. Some of her favourite Hip Hop and Funk artists are Digital Underground, De La Soul, Gangstarr, A Tribe Called Quest and Erik B & Rakim. “I like the rhymes, the fun, the rhythms!” she admits.
Her latest album ‘Traces’ has a naturalistic, ethereal feel with a strong dose of futurism. I especially love the track ‘Exhale’. It’s unpredictable in a sublime way, the sort of lifted mellow groove grounded with a superb classic bassline. Anyone else curious about the headspace she was in when she produced this?
Monika shares.. “I had just come back from Sri Lanka. I did three weeks of ayurvedic treatment there – that is a complete detox for your body and soul . I did yoga and meditation every day, did not eat meat or fish, no coffee, sugar or alcohol. So when I entered the studio after that break I was very calm and in a different state of mind.”
Electronic Dance Music has taken on various forms over the last three years and has, on a large scale, influenced Pop, Rock, Hip Hop and many other genres with many producers doing a lot of the throwback to the 90s sound. This is a strong play on the nostalgic power music has on people.
“I like the old school touch some tracks have,” admits Kruse.
Her own label, aptly titled ‘Terminal M’, is also set to release some juicy stuff in the second half of 2012.
“There will be great releases coming out, Olderic does a new EP with a remix of Patrick Lindsey, tracks by Minicoolboyz feat Sam Paganini, Paul C & Martini, Piemont with a remix of DJ Madskillz and Sian and a MiX CD by Andhim. At the end of the year we will release some remixes of my album.”
Three tracks off her new album ‘Traces’ were released on the 6 June 2012 and is available for online purchase now.
