GoodLuck Interview ~ The Nature Within
In this GoodLuck interview we chat to the trio who are back in South Africa and currently on a launch tour for their exciting new album titled “The Nature Within”.
This album is the most introspective album we have ever created.
Always up for a little musical innovation, GoodLuck sourced inspiration worldwide for this new release.
They talk to us about spontaneous collaborations, what they like to do before their high-energy sets, intensive rehearsals and a MIDI controlled LED lighting show with Bad Weather.
Your latest single ‘Find Me In The Forest’ was released a few weeks ago in August. How do you find your fans and the public at large has responded to it and why do you think this may be so?
GoodLuck Interview: The response has been very interesting to this single. It seems there has been a mixed reaction as we have seen a lot more love from the more underground electronic music scene (especially on Soundcloud) as well as love from more commercial radio. So it seems this song has managed to appeal to both the commercial and the severely anti-commercial at the same time. It may be because the production is edgier and more minimalist while the lyrics and melody and still universal in their message. But we could be wrong!
When the album drops this month, how do you anticipate that the message or story behind the release will be received?
GoodLuck Interview: This album is the most introspective album we have ever created. It is titled “The Nature Within” and while we have always had quite a strong “Nature” theme in our records (especially with the recording of “Creatures of the Night” in the Namibian Desert), we feel that this album takes on a more inwards stance, looking at human nature. Now we can tell stories through music. We hope this album is going to appeal to a much wider audience than ever before.
Looking back on when you started out to where you are now; how would you say your world travels as musicians helped define the sound you have shaped at this point?
GoodLuck Interview: Well, we believe music and travel go hand-in-hand. The more we have experienced and the more we have learnt, the better we have come to understand how music relates to and unites people across the world. With travel and touring we have also found ourselves in studios across the world working with some of the most inspiring producers and artists and as a result we have got a few exciting collaborations on this album.
High energy during a performance makes for an entertaining set, such as you are adored for. What do you most like to do before getting ready to go on stage and how often do you practice?
GoodLuck Interview: We have really intensive production rehearsals from visuals and lighting to instrumentation and finding different ways of interpreting the songs. We have an amazing team of professionals who work alongside us on the production side of things and we have recently created a MIDI controlled LED lighting show with Bad Weather productions which is absolutely epic! Before the show Jules is usually drinking many cups of tea (that is her poison). Ben is usually reading a book and Matthew is warming up his saxophone. It’s all quite relaxed because we save all the energy for the stage.
What do you guys have lined up for summer when it comes to your gig roster? And other than the release of your new album, what other exciting prospects lay ahead for you?
GoodLuck Interview: It has been a really exciting start to the summer season with our album launches around the country and we would like to take this opportunity to thank our fans for supporting us at our launch concerts. It is so wonderful to be back in South Africa and have such overwhelming support for our new album, so we are super grateful. We are looking forward to a busy summer season in SA, including our residency ‘Get Lucky Summer’ which happens every Sunday through the holiday season in Plettenberg Bay. We will also be touring the coastal regions over summer so we are really looking forward to hitting the road around SA. Internationally we have some exciting news in the pipeline that we can’t share just yet.
