15 years of Origin Festival South Africa in pictures
15 years in the making and it is fair to say that Origin Festival has become South Africa’s flagship psychedelic event.
This psychedelic circus boasts everything from massive lineups of international and local headliners, a genuine alternative dancefloor that equals the mainstage in the high standard of artists and production levels, that are at a premium.
Incredible care is taken to create a trippy haven on both dancefloors, from visuals that transport one to another space to all the ancillary activities and eye candy to keep one entertained all weekend, on and off the dancefloors.
With every intention to mimic a true festival environment, as is experienced at the biggest events across Europe, Origin Festival has succeeded and this year’s event, happening this weekend, looks to be no exception.
Whilst we haven’t been able to go back all the way to their humblest of beginnings in 2004, this anthology of images gives us a peek into how Origin Festival has evolved over the years…
2007
Trainspotters (and DJs) will immediately notice a few things;
the stage setup is really close to the dancefloor
the gear used looks pretty oldskool
shade and décor were just a little less prominent 😊
2008
Back in the day when backdrops were the main source of eye candy.
Although the first few Origin Festival events did not have a place to swim – in fact the inaugural event was in a quarry, swimming has become a regular feature for most of its history.
2009
Who remembers the insect bites?
This was the year Origin went to Rainbow’s End, a venue that can be found just before the turnoff to Rawsonville on the N1. The venue itself was cool, except of course, for that fact that many revellers woke up on Monday covered in a weird rash from some sort of sand flea. No harm done though; the party was spectacular.
A young Headroom rocking Origin 2009.
Dickster, who headlines this year, performing at Origin 2009. Notice a young Regan in the background too. 😉
2010
By 2010 Origin Festival was starting to become a ‘not-to-be-missed’ event on the psytrance calendar as the décor and visuals became a big feature.
Protoculture circa 2010 rocking the floor on a Sunday.
2011 – 2019 – the Helderstroom years
In 2011 Origin found the venue it would call home right up to today. Nestled in a valley between Villiersdorp and Greyton, Elandskloof farm offers everything from shaded camping to amazing swimming features and incredible mountain views.
Top that off with production levels that are unmatched in the psy scene in South Africa and what we have is SA’s premier festival for alternative party people who favour music that is underground and cutting-edge.
2012
Beats Floor – a work in progress…
2013
Loving life!!!
2014
Night time décor starting to look like today.
Day time shenanigans
2015
Aan Origin favourite, Avalon, performing a Future Frequency set with Joe from Sonic Species.
Compare the Beats floor here to 2012 above; quite a transformation!
2016
Never a dull moment at Origin…
2017/18
What better way to spend a Sunday?
The temple of dance
2018 – Run Forest, run!!!
A year to be remembered for many amazing highlights, but perhaps one we can all chuckle about; the 200-metre dash across the field 😊
2016-2018 – the video mapping
Origin Festival circa 2016 to ’18 cannot be talked about without mentioning the incredible video mapping that was introduced by Afterlife Audio Visual that changed the game in terms of night time visuals and effects.
This year promises to push those boundaries even further…
See you on the dancefloor!
