Enrico Sangiuliano interviewed ahead of Kinky Summer NYE
Enrico Sangiuliano is the chart dominating techno producer with an instinct that matches his level of talent and skill.
Try not to get too carried away with the trends. Be yourself and reflect that in your music, then people can always relate to what you produce.”
He talks to us about not getting carried away with trends and the importance of being yourself when producing music. He also reflects on his ‘Moon Rocks’ EP out on Drumcode, remixing Moby’s “Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad”, and how he will not be planning his set when he arrives in South Africa. Instead he will feel out the crowd and determine his set that way.
Enrico Sangiuliano will headline the BALTHAZAR’S BEAT BIZARRIUM stage (Deep Techno / Techno / Tech House) at Kinky Summer Presents: Carnivale Bizarre NYE in Cape Town.

Your musical finesse sees you create music that is authentic and also chart topping. What do you think enables a producer to achieve this level of skill with their talents, while remaining true to their musical nature and sound?
Enrico Sangiuliano: Passion, study, perseverance and sacrifice. It’s not easy, but if you can apply these attributes to your work and life, then I think you can always look to achieve your goals.
Being the best-selling techno artist on Beatport in 2016 reflects the strength of your following and your influence on the genre. Why do you think it may be that so many people relate to your music in the way that they do?
Enrico Sangiuliano: I really think it’s so important to build your own path and develop a coherent sound identity in comparison to who you are and what you do. It takes time and intellectual honesty. Try not to get too carried away with the trends. Be yourself and reflect that in your music, then people can always relate to what you produce.
How did you end up doing a remixing Moby’s “Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad” which is part of his “The Remixes” package? And how did you decide to approach this particular remix?
Enrico Sangiuliano: Adam Beyer asked me if I wanted to remix a Moby track for this package, and of course it was a huge yes from me! It was an amazing honor to be on this great package with so many other fantastic artists, but also carried a lot of responsibility with being such a classic and well-loved track. For this remix, as it’s such a sweet song to start with, I worked on making this into a peak time techno track but I was very aware of still trying to preserve its native values.
Tell us about your first Drumcode EP “Moon Rocks” out in August this year. While you were working on it, what shape did the concept start to take and did you expect it to remain in the Beatport top ten for as long as it has?
Enrico Sangiuliano: All of my EP’s come from the need to have something that I feel I am perhaps missing. “Moon Rocks” was a long project, lasting for about two years. I wouldn’t have expected it to stay in the top ten for so long. But I knew that joining forces with Drumcode would create the strong bond which I needed to help push this EP in the hope that it would do well. I am very happy to see its still in the charts today.
If you had to choose your top three remix collaborations, what would they be and why?
Enrico Sangiuliano: That’s a hard question and almost impossible to choose. Every single remix collaboration comes from a unique situation or moment. The best remixes never come from the exchange of money either, otherwise you loose the meaning and even the result is undermined.
You will be playing at the Kinky NYE party in SA. How are you going about planning your set and what can everyone be looking forward to from you?
Enrico Sangiuliano: Actually, I do not know what to expect yet. My set will take shape when I am there at the gig itself. I always look for the reaction of the crowd, and then determine where I am going to take my set. I enjoy being there and in that special moment. I am excited to see the venue, the crowd in South Africa and also bring some fun for a special NYE party!
