DJ Zan-D likes to keep it fresh
DJ Zan-D says he likes to keep it fresh and is billed as a flexible DJ who mixes for radio, television, and also performs live. He is a mentor and taught at DJ Zinhle’s FUSE Academy.
He does the YFM #YTKO live hip hop mixes and his mixes were featured weekly on the TV show, Club 808. DJ Zan-D talks to us about the township rap style that the music industry ‘has been sleeping on’, how he keeps his mixes fresh, his debut single #Runway and just when everyone can expect the two follow up remixes.
Tell us about the creative idea behind your debut single #Runway featuring N’Veigh, Blaklez, Sean Pages and Bass. Why did you choose to make this track your breakout track?
DJ Zan-D: The song was actually an idea that came with Bass. He sent me the beat and concept and I fell in love with it instantly. The beat was easy to the ear, the hook was very feminine so I had to get rappers that would give the song some street cred hence my choices.
When will the two follow up remixes be released and who will they be remixed by?
DJ Zan-D: The remixes are out in the first week of September. The one has been done by Playground Productions which is a duo based in Johannesburg and the other one is an extended remake I did with Big Dreamz.
For your YFM #YTKO live hip hop mixes, what do you like to keep in mind when prepping for these sets and why?
DJ Zan-D: I always aim to break new songs to keep the mixes fresh. I try and keep [the] selection to party music since the mixes are on a Thursday so they are more like weekend starters.
Lastly I always make sure I do some tricks, scratching, beat juggling, Tone playing, mashups etc. for my mixes to standout from what the other DJ’s are doing.
How did you first get involved with DJ Zinhle’s FUSE Academy and what do you most enjoy from the teaching experience?
DJ Zan-D: I was called by DJ Zinhle to come teach the hip hop classes. I loved seeing the students coming in clueless and within a few weeks you see the smile on their faces as they mix their first song.
Has helping other aspiring DJs realise their dreams taught you anything along the way and what were those things?
DJ Zan-D: I remember teaching Ms Cosmo how to play and seeing her grow to be the brand that she is now just proved that through passion, dedication and hard work; anything is possible.
Other than the release of your #Runway single and its remixes, what other exciting things does DJ Zan-D have planned for the rest of the year and 2016?
DJ Zan-D: I’m currently working on my new single which is due for release at the end of September or beginning of October. This will be followed by the third single due for release in December.
I’m also working on a Kasi Rap Mixtape. This will be released early 2016 and features some hot rappers which I have been finding through my travels around the country. This mixtape will be showcasing the style of rap that is really popular in the townships but [that] the music industry has really slept on.
