Recovering Catholic School boy, BreakDLaw, has every reason to smile broadly – his single debut single ‘Paint Me Like A French Girl’ (ft. The Glitchfox), has gone beyond expectations. 100 000 SoundCloud plays and 42 000 YouTube views in less than a month can’t be wrong. And to make matters more exciting, now there’s a new ‘Paint Me Like A French Girl’ remix by rising Johannesburg favourite Royal K (get it here for free). Question is, is this a one hit wonder? Or can he do it again?
Hello BreakDLaw. Everybody’s been talking about your new video ‘Paint Me Like A French Girl’ – you must be feeling good. Are you?
BreakDLaw interview: Hey, yeah the ‘Paint Me’ music video has been in the pipeline for quite some time. After signing the single to a label in Italy, EGO Records, our indecision was put to rest and they assured us that they would handle the production on the music video. Overall we’re pleased with how it turned out. It was shot in a Turin in Italy.
“It’s a little bit daunting to say the least, when friends and fans ask “so when is your next Number One?” I just wanna make music.”
It seems to have hit that sweet sexy spot dance videos often crave. According to the video’s YouTube description, the title was a phrase you used to shout at your mates at your All-Boy Catholic School. You have to tell us more.
BreakDLaw interview: Ah, I was a bit of a prankster at school. Digged making the homies squirm. The real story is The Glitchfox wanted to do a French track; she wrote out some sexy lyrics and tried them out to the song (which I had originally called ‘Carving Park Benches’). Anyway, I have a habit of singing out random stuff that pops into my head, and came up with the melody and phrase ‘Paint Me Like The French Girl’. The Glitchfox who was sitting next to me in the car turned to look at me and said something like “Incroyable! I love it!.” So we just went with it.
I hate to ask about the boob, but I’m going to ask about the boob. Was that the initial plan? Did it just happen? Do her parents know?
BreakDLaw interview: [Laughs] I’m pretty sure the Italian director, Davide Fiore, told her not to wear a bra just to get that shot. The Europeans have loved nudity for centuries, so it really didn’t surprise me at all to get some sneaky side-boobage nipple action.
The ‘Paint Me Like A French Girl’ track itself has reached #1 spots and, not to mention, over 100k SoundCloud plays in only 2 weeks. Do you think you’ve set the bar high enough for your next release?
BreakDLaw interview: Definitely! It’s a little bit daunting to say the least, when friends and fans ask “so when is your next Number One?” I just wanna make music, having it reach number one was huge, but even just having one of my tracks play on the radio is good enough for me!
The next big thing happening with the single is a remix by Royal K. What can we expect and what is your take on the Johannesburg DJ’s rework? Do you like it, or do you like it a lot?
BreakDLaw interview: It was one of the last SA remixes to be submitted and the techy two-step vibe is going down in clubs locally. A more recent international remix by Max Manie and Scheinizzl is making waves in Europe.
Your tracks are being released by F! Records, but your Facebook bio doesn’t mention them. Is the relationship permanent or a once-off?
BreakDLaw interview: For now we’ve only signed our debut track, but are currently in talks regarding an artist deal with them.
Lastly, you recently opened up Sterling Sound Studio 4 – which provides audio post production. Would you like to capitalise on this interview and tell us more about it?
